Delamination of Adhesive Labels

The use of adhesive labels is important in many industries. A failing bond can have severe consequences.
A major shipping company experienced this when their address labels separated from parcels with increasing outside temperatures. This led to delays in the delivery or even complete loss of shipments.
An analysis of the defective shipping labels by means of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) showed that the adhesive label side was contaminated with a modified polysiloxane, that was not detected on the adhesive side of label batches which performed well. This knowledge led to a narrower specification of the chemical composition of the adhesive film.
